Second Edition
In the years following the publication of the first edition, a significant body of new source material came to light- material that had not been available during the original writing of this work. As circumstances allowed, Micheál Lally returned to the project intermittently, revising and expanding it over time. In these later stages, he was joined by his son, Ultan, whose archival research and collaboration helped shape the additional content presented in this second edition.
The epilogue offers an opportunity to revisit and reassess aspects of the Revolutionary period in South Mayo, addressing discrepancies in earlier accounts while broadening the historical narrative. Crucially, it introduces voices that have long gone unheard- participants from both sides of the Anglo-Irish conflict whose testimonies add depth, nuance, and, at times, contradiction to the established record. These perspectives not only challenge previously accepted versions of events but also enrich our understanding of what unfolded in this part of the west of Ireland a century ago.
This edition stands as both a continuation and a refinement of the original work, deepening its exploration of local history through newly uncovered evidence and collaborative scholarship.
